What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin shells milled from porcelain and applied to the front of the teeth to give a flawless finish. Unlike dental crowns which cover the whole of the tooth, veneers cover just the front surface to give your smile a seamless appearance.

Each veneer is custom-designed to fit an individual tooth and can mask a multitude of dental issues, including:

  • Small chips or cracks

  • Gaps in between two teeth

  • Unevenly sized teeth

  • Deeply stained teeth that do not respond to teeth whitening

  • Mildly misaligned teeth

  • Teeth with worn-down enamel

How does the process work?

This is how we place porcelain veneers at SDG:

At an initial consultation, we discuss your smile goals and assess your cosmetic dental needs to create a bespoke treatment plan.

During your first appointment, the teeth to be covered will be prepared by removing a thin layer of tooth enamel so that your dental veneers sit flush in your smile. This is a painless procedure carried out with a local anaesthetic.

Then, impressions are taken of your teeth to make moulds from which your porcelain veneers will be created. Meanwhile, you will go home with temporary veneers to protect your teeth.

The second and final appointment (a few weeks later) will be to have your temporaries  replaced with permanent veneers at our Parkdale Vic clinic. They will be tried on for size and any adjustments made, before our dentist bonds them securely in place.

That’s all there is to it … a dazzling new smile in just 2 dental visits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Veneers

How much do dental veneers cost?

It’s difficult to give an exact figure because it depends on the type of veneers you choose and how many you need. According to the National Dental Fee survey in 2017, porcelain veneers cost on average up to $1983 per tooth and composite veneers cost up to $860. The only way to get an exact price is to visit our dentist in Parkdale, Vic for a full smile evaluation where she will be happy to explain costs.

What are composite dental veneers?

These are made from composite resin (the same as we use for white tooth fillings) and moulded directly onto the front surface of the teeth. They are usually around 50% cheaper but not as durable as porcelain veneers. They also have a tendency to discolour over time and will need replacing within 5-7 years.

How long do porcelain veneers last in Parkdale?

Porcelain veneers correctly placed by an experienced dentist can last between 10 and 15 years and are cared for with brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits.

How do I get my veneers the same colour as my other teeth?

While veneers can be made to match your existing tooth colour, most patients prefer to undergo teeth whitening so they can choose a whiter shade of veneer to achieve optimal results.
